What is the Gathering of Leaders all about?
The Gathering is an annual meeting of leading social innovators and their counterparts in business, government, philanthropy, academia, and the nonprofit sector. The objective of the Gathering is to facilitate a cross-sector dialogue among social entrepreneurs and leaders in other sectors to develop and advance innovative solutions to some of our country's most pressing social problems. The Gathering has been held each year in February since 2005.
Who comes to the Gathering of Leaders?
The Gathering brings together about 60 social entrepreneurs and 100 other leaders each year representing business, philanthropy, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector.
The Gathering aims to include a combination of returning and new participants at each Gathering, providing both a continuity of dialogue and infusing new ideas and perspectives into the community. In 2008, approximately 54 percent of participants were new to the Gathering, with the balance returning for a second, third, or fourth year.
The Gathering is an invitation-only event. Each year, the list of participants is developed by the team at New Profit in partnership with an advisory board of social entrepreneurs and other participants. Participants share a commitment to social change, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a passion for scaling social innovation.
Why aren't more Gathering materials available online?
We are thrilled to present some of the most compelling audio recordings, transcripts, and written materials from previous years' events. In order to protect the confidentiality and intellectual property of our participants, we request permission from our speakers to share all the content that we publish. To date, we have chosen from among the highlights of our historical collection, and we will make additional materials from this archive available as we are able to secure permission.
Who sponsors the Gathering of Leaders?
Since the first Gathering in 2005, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has been a lead sponsor of the Gathering, providing the majority of support to make the event possible. Knight Foundation has recently committed to continued sponsorship from 2010 through 2012. Other supporters from 2005 to 2009 have included Blue Ridge Foundation New York, Chuck Harris, Dorot Foundation, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Hunt Alternatives Fund, and SeaChange Capital Partners.
