2006 Gathering of Leaders
The 2006 Gathering brought more than 120 social entrepreneurs and other leaders from across sectors back to Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York for the second year in a row. Participants focused on how they could use the collective energy of the growing Gathering community to create more effective public policy and private and public resources at national, state, and local levels.
Session Highlights A panel discussion on the vision and promise of social entrepreneurship. The panel featured David Gergen of the Kennedy School, James Jensen of The Jenesis Group, and social entrepreneurs Cheryl Dorsey, Echoing Green; Jon Schnur, New Leaders for New Schools; Trabian Shorters, Ashoka; and Michelle Nunn, Hands On Network.
Harvard Business School Professor Clay Christensen's presentation on catalytic innovation in the social sector. Christensen introduced his theory of how innovations take root in the private sector and applied it to driving systems change in the social sector, with particular focus on the use of innovative distribution systems.
Working sessions organized around areas of impact such as education (in and around school), democracy and civic engagement, and anti-poverty. The sessions, facilitated by leaders from across sectors, sought to identify integrated approaches for accelerating change. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the Kennedy School's Stephen Goldsmith, former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen, and Nancy Roob of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation worked to identify ways to synchronize their efforts for greater efficiency and powerful impact.
