“ Surely it must be possible to escape these false alternatives and combine the conservative respect for value-creating institutions with a radical, active concern for the poor and oppressed.”

2008 Gathering of Leaders
Synergy. It's an overused word, but one that nevertheless captures the central theme of the 2008 Gathering of Leaders. Examples of synergy and its potential to help create widespread social change surfaced throughout the Gathering in Miami where more than 160 participants worked together to unleash the power of a community that has strengthened and grown since the first Gathering in 2005.
Key Questions A series of questions focused efforts to drive widespread change across three days:
How do newer, smaller, high-growth social entrepreneurs and larger, national nonprofit icons work together?
How can social entrepreneurs come together at the city level to demonstrate that real results and widespread change are possible?
How can we best deploy Web 2.0 technologies and the power of social networking to unlock the potential within our communities?
How can social entrepreneurs increase their "leadership multiplier" to ensure that the nonprofit sector develops world-class talent?
How can the America Forward Coalition introduce social entrepreneurship into the national dialogue as an innovative and more effective way to solve our nation's problems?
Speakers An exciting group of speakers joined participants in dialogue and working sessions on overcoming the challenges to scaling social innovation:
Ram Charan, author of The Leadership Pipeline and consultant to many Fortune 500 CEOs, who Newsweek has called "the CEO whisperer"
Michael Gerson, former chief speechwriter and senior policy advisor to President George W. Bush
Peter Hart, NBC/Wall Street Journal pollster and leading analyst of public opinion
Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu, who launched Louisiana's Office of Social Entrepreneurship, the first of its kind in the nation
Dr. Michael Lomax, civil rights activist and current President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund
Sean Parker, co-founder of Napster, Plaxo, and Founding President of Facebook
Barry Salzberg, CEO of Deloitte LLP, which announced in 2008 a three-year, $50 million commitment to strengthen the nonprofit sector and help foster social change
