In this video from the 2009
Gathering, Jean Martin, Executive Director of the Corporate Executive Board, unpacks the challenges and opportunities for nonprofit leadership development. Her presentation works from the leadership challenge—the fact that 78,000 new leaders will be needed in the nonprofit section by 2016—through to practical "rip-and-run" methods to help any organization develop their high potential leaders.
Martin addresses four key aspects of leadership development: 1.) identifying high-potential leaders, 2.) helping leaders develop leaders, 3.) using challenges as development opportunities, and 4.) monitoring an organization's leadership health. Her message to the nonprofit sector? It's time for current leaders to focus on building the next generation of leaders who can move programs forward to achieve greater impact.
